Chapter Nine

Cody made his way to Vince’s house and hoped he could reel in his excitement so he didn’t spill his news too fast. He parked, then rushed up to the porch. Part of him wondered if he should’ve texted Vince earlier to ask if he was available. What if he was doing something online that couldn’t be interrupted?

He knocked on the door and waited. Damn. His excitement would be the death of him.

Vince opened the door. “Hey. How’d the job search go?”

“Quite well. May I come in?”

“Sure.” Vince stepped out of the way. “I like the outfit. I’m so used to seeing you in gym attire, but you’re damn fine when you get cleaned up.”

“You’re flattering me.” Cody strode into the house. Unlike his, Vince’s house was much more spartan. Only enough furniture to be useful, no photos on the walls, no plants…no personality. “I wanted to share my news.”

“News?” Vince closed the door. “Well, spill.”

“Am I interrupting anything?”

“Not right now. I’m in between stuff, but I’ve got my half hour at a party in twenty minutes,” Vince said. “What’s cookin’?”

“I got a job. It’s contingent on my passing a background check, but I have no doubt I will.” He grasped Vince’s hands. “I’m going to work at the community center. You predicted it. You were the reason I even checked there for job openings.”

“That’s wonderful.” Vince hugged him. “I’m proud of you. What are you going to be doing?”

“So far, I’ll be the instructor at a few classes and work with the golden agers, but also I’m being considered for a position as coach with the cross-country team.” He held tight to Vince’s hands. “I’d get to be the coach for this generation like Coach Marquez was for us.”

“Wow.” Vince’s eyes lit up and he slipped his hand around the back of Cody’s neck. “That’s… I’m so proud of you.”

“I’m thrilled. I won’t have to put up with Dawson and I’ll get to work with Detweiler. Remember him?”

“Sure. He’s one of the administrators at the community center. His wife bought some of my books.”

“Well, he’ll be my boss of sorts, but the other great thing is that I get free access to the center, but so do you.” Cody let go of Vince. “It’s like talking to James and getting our date opened my eyes to so many things I never thought were possible. My world changed.”

“It sort of did.” Vince hooked his fingers in his pants pockets. “What are you going to do now?”

“I don’t know, but I want to celebrate with you.” He slid his gaze over Vince. “What are you doing for that party? Do you need a buff boyfriend to help you promote? I’m pretty good with graphics.”

“Buff boyfriend?” Vince tipped his head. “Did you just come up with that?”

“I did.” His cheeks burned. “Too much?”

“No, but you’ve given me an idea,” Vince said. “I don’t know if you’re interested, but you being my buff boyfriend would be the promotional tool I’ve been looking for.
